Point of departure for Electronic Flora - Telemark is the painting Fra Kviteseid i Telemark (1900) by norwegian landscape painter Thorvald Erichsen (1868-1939). The painting represents a breaking point in norwegian landscape painting where nature no longer should be reproduced but represented. Lerin/Hystad has travelled to Kviteseid in Telemark and used GSR-sensors to record plants and trees at the same location where Erichsen made his painting over 100 years ago. The electrical signals from the plants are fed through a modular synthesizer and the plants controls the tones, melodies and rythms coming from the synth. The work consists of recordings of ten different plants. Each plant is represented with it´s own composition and a drawing. The signals from the plants also control parts of the video editing. The work is a collaboration with nature where the listener can’t hear the music from the plants without the sensors and synthesizer acting as a translator and we can’t make our music without the vibrations of the plants. This work was produced during a one year Artist in Residence program at Kunstnerbyen Skien.
