SPIRAEA

Spiraea

Graphite drawing

59,4 x 84,1 cm

This work explores the interactions of the spiraea with its environment. Green rose chafers, Cetonia aurata, are climbing the branches and drinking nectar from the flowers. Recordings of the spiraea's electrical activity are transformed through sonification into sound. The spiraea is embedded in countless other organisms and when we place our sensors on the leaves to capture a moment’s electric activity, we do not just capture the spiraea but also all the threads from the ecological weave in which it is entangled.
